We decided to try out our old Sportiva Mountaineering boots which have sat in the cave for far too long. Our hike is an old favourite which takes us through ancient spruce and fir forests along the Saxon Bisse to Prarion.

Snow cover was less than normal, however an advantage was not having to pick our way across any snow slides (which can be treacherous). We decided to have lunch at Prarion and were lucky to get the last table inside. Best to book if going at the weekend as this is a popular spot for local families.

We tried out our new ‘slip-on’ crampons for the short steepish slope back to the Bisse. Excellent buy. We then retraced our footsteps back to the car. Boots were not the most comfortable for either of us and will look for something less stiff for longer winter hikes. But they still have a place for when there is wet /deep snow.

Hike 14km round trip, although the ascent was 1,413m did not feel as much as a lot of the trail in on a rough contour once you get onto the Bisse.
