Decided to give my new Boots a try out (which we purchased on the snowy day coming back from Obergoms) snow shoeing from Haute Nendaz to Sion on the Upper Bisse (Saxon Bisse). We have done this once before when there was a lot more snow and it was very tricky in places. So was keen to see what it would be like in a ‘low snow’ year – much less nerve wracking.
Whatever route you choose there is a steep climb from the village to the Upper Bisse of about 400m. We decided to broadly follow the ski slope up as there was a cafe just below where we joined the Bisse. Lovely spot for a coffee and hot chocolate.
The Bisse was in good condition and there were no treacherous places, a relief. We had thought of doing a circular trip but there is a lovely winter bar up beyond Siviez that we decided to visit instead. After a very strong glass of van chau (plus plum shot) sitting in the sun and admiring the views we opted for the free ski bus back to Nendaz.
Boots worked out really well, very happy with them.
One way the hike was 11.5km. Saw 2 black squirrels and admired the wooden sculptures cut out on wooden posts along the Bisse
