Decided on a short break to Galtür to celebrate our anniversary of when we met. All was going well on our drive up on Saturday, until we tried to check in at the hotel and realised we had arrived a day early! Fortunately there was one single room (with a large bed!) still available and the director was happy to accommodate us. Some nail biting moments.

the Post Hotel where we are staying is excellent, great food and well appointed large rooms, including a telly with UK channels on which we could watch England’s opening 6 Nations game against Italy. A good exciting game. Have not ventured into the Sauna yet but given how cold the temperatures are expected to be this week I think a warming session will be in order.

For our first day we XC on our skinny skis down the valley to Ischgl and back. A round trip of just over 20 km with total ascent of about 600m. The most exciting part was a long, steepish downhill section through a river gorge. My gps said I got to 25km an hour which was nerve racking on narrow skis in the groomed tramlines. Fortunately we both kept our nerve and did not fall over. The descent was all in shade and was very chilly so we were grateful for a bowl of soup and peppermint tea when we got to Ischgl. I also bought myself a new black armless jacket to keep me warm on the way back. Very nice, glad it was on sale!

The ski back up was hard work as we were climbing most of the way and in the steeper sections needed to herringbone. I was happy that I managed not to fall over on the ski. However, when we got to the end and had to traverse a car park, I had a very hard fall on some black sheet ice which had been covered by a dusting of snow. Very sore upper bum which hopefully will not restrict what we do too much over the next few days.
