Winter hike Galtür to Kopf-Stausse

A very frozen Kops lake One of the great things about the Ischgl Paznaun area is that they prepare winter walking trails alongside the cross country ski trails. As they are packed down we could hike with normal boots rather than taking snowshoes which is nice. Today after a very leisurely start we wrapped up warm and headed out from our hotel up the valley to Wirl and then took a route up the Zeinisbach River Valley below the ski area up to the Kops-Stausee reservoir. Going up the river valley was fairly sheltered and with some sun was...

Anniversary Trip – Galtür (First day)

Decided on a short break to Galtür to celebrate our anniversary of when we met. All was going well on our drive up on Saturday, until we tried to check in at the hotel and realised we had arrived a day early! Fortunately there was one single room (with a large bed!) still available and the director was happy to accommodate us. Some nail biting moments. the Post Hotel where we are staying is excellent, great food and well appointed large rooms, including a telly with UK channels on which we could watch England’s opening 6 Nations game against Italy. A good exciting game. Have not ventured into the Sauna yet but given how cold the temperatures are expected to be this week I think a warming session will be in order. For our first day we XC on our skinny skis down the valley to Ischgl and back. A round trip of just over 20 km with total ascent of about 600m. The most exciting part was a long, steepish downhill section through a river gorge. My gps said I got to 25km an hour which was nerve racking on narrow skis in the groomed tramlines. Fortunately we both kept our nerve and did not fall over. The descent was all in shade and was very chilly so we were grateful for a bowl of soup and peppermint...

Obergoms XC trip

View down the valley towards Geschinen where we started  The overnight dump of snow that was forecast never materialised so we decided to do a morning XC ski on our backcountry skis in the area around Prarion. Lovely morning, unfortunately hotspots reappeared with my boots and even with Compead was not able to prevent blisters forming. Mike also got a blister. We decided, after a bit of discussion, to head up to Obergoms the next day (Friday) to source some ‘trail’ skis and boots for him rather than relying on being able to get them when we got to...

First ski day 2018

Looking down the Versonay ski slopes to Sion below Having a beer, watching Mike hunt for his (guitar) pectum which disappeared into thin air as he was playing! Cosy night in with a beef casserole and bottle of red wine to celebrate a fun day on piste in Sivez / Versonay. The piste was in great condition but the one, very short, time we ventured off piste it was semi breakable crust – not nice at all. Hence we enjoyed quite piste runs with no queues on a perfect warm winters day with no wind. Good transition from South African...
